More than three fourth of the prison population in the jails of Assam have literacy below high School level, while the remaining have comparatively better educational qualifications.
Further, the Jail authorities are giving training to educated prisoners to enable them to teach less educated and illiterate prisoners in the Jails. Advance educational avenues are available to inmates so that they can pursue higher studies through Open Universities.
There are 13(Thirteen) Nos. of schools inside the Jails of Assam and 12 Nos. of Teachers in the Jails. These schools are there in the Central Jail,Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon and Silchar and in the District Jail, Nalbari, Barpeta, Udalguri, Kokrajhar, Sadiya, Tinsukia and Sonari. Besides, the school teachers appointed in other Jails also teach the illiterate prisoners in some other Jails of the State.
The Jail Department of Assam has taken steps for providing higher education to the literate prisoners in the Jails of Assam. Presently, the KKHSOU has been providing higher education to the literate prisoners in different courses imparted by these institutions.
During the year 2016-17, 10 (ten) more Study Centres of KKHSOU have been set up in different Jails of Assam as shown below:
